I have always loved cooking. Not just cooking for the sake of it (because we need to eat) but cooking because I love the creativity (plus all the fun of blending and mixing spices) that comes with it. Moreover, I also enjoy feeding my family and friends with hearty home cooked meals.

I have used celery as a base ingredient in my soups, stews and chicken dishes in my kitchen for years. Celery is one of those vegetables that you just can’t take for granted. It’s also one of those vegetables that you either love or hate because of its very characteristic taste (which I find irresistible). It has the power to transform any dish into something that’s super delicious.

The Health Benefits of Celery

The health benefits of celery are many. It is a superfood, and it’s one of the most popular ingredients found in both green juice and green smoothie recipes today. Just google “green juice recipes” and I can almost guarantee that 8 out of 10 green juice sites will list celery as one of the ingredients.

So why is this vegetable so popular? Let’s dive in and find out why adding this fantastic food to your diet could benefit your health.

Celery Nutritional Value

Celery has been used in home remedies for centuries due to its rich nutritional and medicinal properties. It’s an excellent source of Vitamin A, Vitamin K, Dietary Fiber, Folate, Potassium, and Manganese. It’s  also a good source of Vitamin C, Riboflavin, Vitamin B6, Pantothenic Acid, Calcium, Magnesium, and Phosphorus.

Weight Loss

Celery can aid your weight loss journey. It contains outstanding amounts of dietary fiber. Dietary fiber attracts water which fills your stomach and brings about the feeling of satiation. Furthermore, it provides you with loads of other essential vitamins to keep you healthy on your weight loss journey.

The Health Benefits of Celery Also Include Calming Down Anxiety

When you suffer from anxiety, unwinding at night can sometimes be pretty difficult. You lose hours of sleep and feel completely tired the next morning. Turns out that chewing on some raw celery helps calm down anxiety. Celery helps with calming down anxiety because it contains polyphenols. Polyphenols are naturally-occurring oxidants that have anti-anxiety effects.

Celery Lowers Your Bad Cholesterol Levels

Our bodies need cholesterol. However, it very important that these levels be within the healthy range. According to the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, LDL cholesterol also known as “bad” cholesterol is one of the leading risk factors for heart disease. Having elevated levels of LDL can lead to an accumulation of cholesterol in the arteries. And that’s not a good thing as it could restrict the flow of oxygenated blood to your heart.

Celery contains a chemical called butylphthalide. Butylphthalide is responsible for its characteristic taste and aroma. The same butylphthalide can also lower bad (LDL) cholesterol levels in the body. According to a study, just consuming the recommended dosage of 4 stalks of celery a day could lower LDL cholesterol levels.

I didn’t know if celery could help you lose weight. I am not really a fan of drinking green juice. Not sure if adding banana will make the taste better. I like to try it someday.

Celery is great for weight loss. I have never tried adding a banana to my green juice. Give a go, it might taste good. 🙂

I don’t care for cooked celery but I love to snack on cut up stalks. Now that you tell me it’s good for cholesterol I’ll be more conscious of eating it.

I didn’t know that celery also helps in calming down anxiety. It’s a super food for sure. It would be so good if we actually look in our own garden before the chest of medicines. Thank you for reinforcing this belief.

Another super awesome thing about salary is that if lowers blood pressure! I’ve always encouraged my husband to eat as much celery as he would like since he loves it. He has borderline hypertension and the celery brings his blood pressure down naturally!

I wish that I could eat raw celery. It isn’t my favorite vegetable. I have used it in soup because it adds flavor without a ton of calories.
