I never had a problem losing weight or maintaining weight in my twenties. So it came as a surprise when I hit a weight -loss plateau as a thirty something-year-old. I just suddenly found it slightly harder to shed off pounds until about six months ago when I discovered an amazing way to lose weight fast and managed to get past my weight-loss plateau.
I’ve been living on a high protein and low-carb diet for almost 6 months now. And what prompted my switch to this way of life was the fact that my body had suddenly decided to make it harder for me to lose weight easily. I was within my healthy BMI range. What I write here is a description of a dieting program that has worked very well for me, and I hope that it will work for you too. I’m no dietician, just a mama who has managed to lose and maintain weight successfully with the Atkins 20.
How to Lose 5 Pounds In 2 Weeks On A Low-Carb Diet
The Atkins diet is a popular weight loss diet that focuses on helping you burn fat by restricting the number of net carbs you consume. You eat plenty of proteins, vegetables and healthy fats like avocado, so you don’t even go hungry. What’s more, you don’t even have to exercise to lose weight (although exercising is a good way to stay fit).
The Atkins diet is carried out in 4 simple phases. I lost 5 pounds of weight during the first phase (aka Induction Phase). No kidding! My husband even remarked that I would vanish if I carried on with the Induction Phase for much longer.
Below is a list of the 4 phases of the Atkins 20 diet. It’s important to remember that our bodies behave and respond differently to weight loss diets so don’t get discouraged if your weight loss progresses at a slower pace.
Atkins Diet Phases
Phase 1 (Induction Phase)
This phase is designed to help kick-start weight loss by restricting the number of calories you eat to just 20 grams of net carbs per day. The induction phase is the first stage of the Atkins diet. This is the phase where you will lose the majority of your weight within just 2 weeks. I lost all the 5 pounds that I wanted to lose during this first stage despite some setbacks. The Induction Phase is also the trickiest part of the program as the body switches from burning carbohydrates for energy to burning fat.
Phase 2 (or continued weight loss phase)
During the second phase, the weight loss continues, and you start adding a bit more calories back into your diet. You increase your intake of net carbs from 20 grams to anything between 25 grams – 45 grams of net carbs per day. I added almonds and cottage cheese back into my diet in phase 2.
Phase 3 (pre-maintenance stage)
The third phase of the Atkins diet is where you test your tolerance for carbs. You will learn how much you can raise the number of carbs in your diet and still maintain weight loss. Adjust your net carb intake if you stop losing weight.
Phase 4 (maintenance phase)
Phase 4 is a lifelong phase where you maintain your goal weight and continue to make healthy food choices. You know how many carbs your body can tolerate and it’s now easier for you to maintain your goal weight.
Tips To Make Your Diet Transition Easier
When I started off on this diet, I experienced hypoglycemia on the third day where my blood sugar levels were so low, and I was so weak I could faint. My body wanted sugar – lots of it. It was running out of its favorite fuel and didn’t like that one bit. I had to suck on a piece of candy (yes broke the rules but just a tiny bit) and was feeling ok in no time. I did that in order function well, and I was not going to go hard core and risk passing out.
Apply a gradual reduction of net carbs, in the beginning especially if your current diet contains a lot of carbs. I went down to 20 grams of net carbs on day one, but things got pretty tough by day three. I increased the number of carbs slightly so I could function at my normal pace then slowly went back down to 20 grams of net carbs per day.
Eat Every Two Hours And Still Lose 5 Pounds In 2 Weeks
If you are like me, then you will love being on a low-carb diet. What I like about this diet is that I’m able to eat plenty of different high protein foods and vegetables. I don’t have to worry about getting hungry. I eat what I want when I’m hungry as long as it is on the list of allowed foods. There’s no starving involved.
